Located in a rich dairying region, Leongatha is a major commercial service centre offering modern shopping facilities and servicing nearby towns such as Korumburra to the west.

Attractions around Leongatha include a number of galleries, craft shops and museums. The South Gippsland Tourist Railway runs a collection of historical diesel locomotives and railcars between Nyora and Leongatha, passing through Korumburra. Places of interest further afield include Wilsons Promontory National Park and the scenic Strzelecki Ranges.

Leongatha marks the start of the Great Southern Rail Trail. Beginning just south of the Leongatha railway station, it consists of a 53 kilometre walking, cycling and horse riding trail which covers much of the distance south-east to Foster, and passes through a several small towns which offer visitors refreshments and attractions such as wineries, galleries and antique shops. Scenic views of Wilsons Promontory National Park are enjoyed from the trail close to the Foster end.
